Starting Solids and Managing Feeding Obstacles

Workshop Starting Solids and Managing Feeding Obstacles at Bloosom Birth

Brook offered a Starting Solids workshop at the Blossom Birth in Palo Alto and Family Fair last year, and she has supported families one on one, but she has been wanting to offer a workshop in a small group setting for a while.

Brook has scheduled the first for Sunday, May 25th at 2-4pm.  The class is capped at 6 and will likely be booked with a waiting list for my own clients.

Her plan is to provide 2 different workshops on solid foods:

Starting Solids: 2 hour workshop for parents who are preparing for/have just started introducing solids (target ages: 3-7 month olds)

  • How you know when to start solids?
  • Which foods do you introduce first?
  • How to prepare first foods
  • How much to feed and on what schedule
  • Feeding Utensils
  • Positions for feeding
  • Graduating textures, flavors, frequency, and volume
  • Supporting independence in eating

**Structure of this workshop will primarily be around education and demonstration.  Followed by Q&A.**

Managing Feeding Obstacles (2 hour workshop)

  • Pre-workshop questionnaire of feeding issues
  • Discussion of parents’ goals for their children
  • Understanding typical progression in eating abilities and how to recognize them in your baby
  • Appropriate vs problematic eating behaviors
  • Understanding the cause of poor eating behaviors
  • Parents decide what, when and where of feeding; children decide whether and how much

**Structure of this workshop will focus on education and troubleshooting specific problems of the attendees**

Below is a summary of the film and the link (with trailer) to pre-order tickets. ******This screening won’t happen if enough tickets aren’t pre-purchased by April 28. **** The Milky Way – This is a documentary exposé about breastfeeding in the United States. We show how women can reclaim their birthright and restore the nursing mother archetype. More than a breastfeeding promotion film, this is a film by, for, and about women. It is about the knowledge that inherently resides in every woman, how to access that knowledge and how to trust what we already know. It is a film that inspires women to say, “I can do that!” “I want to do that!”

New Moms Group at BirthWays

New Moms Group at BirthWays

Tuesdays 1:30-3pm

April 29th-June 3rd

According to Sara L on Yelp this is the “BEST MOMS GROUP EVER!!  Fantastic facilitator, wonderful women, we’re still hanging out months later.  This group will save your sanity.”

This is a facilitated support group for new moms and their babies -(usually babies rage in age from 2 weeks to 4 months). Tuesdays April 29th-June 3rd from 1:30-3:00 we will gather at the BirthWays space to take some time to give back to yourself and share the intensity and joys of new motherhood with other moms.

This 6 week series will cover such topics as: sharing birth stories, finding time to heal your body and mind, feeding your baby, adjusting to your new identity as a parent, trusting yourself enough to know when not to listen to another piece of “good” advice, navigating changing relationships with partners and friends, going out with your baby, preparing to go back to work or stay home with baby, sleep… what sleep? And most importantly, realizing that you are not alone in this journey.

For a lot of moms this is an opportunity to practice getting out of the house and feeding and caring for your babies in public in a safe space.

Brooke on Yelp says this: “I took a Birthways new mom class that started when my son was just two weeks old. It was such an amazing experience to be with about 12 or so other new moms going through the same things I was going through. I learned a lot about breastfeeding, sleeping issues, massage, and much more for my son, but also self-care for me. It’s been three years and our group still keeps in touch. I feel a deep connection to those kids, too. When I see those little guys at the Y or around town I think back to those early sleep-deprived days and actually miss it. Birthways is such a great supportive environment. Highly recommended!!”

Facilitated by:

Stacia Biltekoff ~Postpartum Doula, Co- Founder of Bun & Bundle and Mama

Cost: $175 per 6 week session

Food Sensitivities: Your pregnancy, Your baby & You at Natural Resources in San Francisco

Food Sensitivities: Your pregnancy, Your baby & You
(pre-registration is recommended, limited space available)

Saturday, April 26th, 2014 from 12pm – 1pm

Food sensitivities and allergies have become more and more common over the past several years. We are seeing a growing number of babies, children and adults with food sensitivities and allergies and a growing number of foods that people are showing adverse reactions to. Symptoms of food sensitivities can range from full blown life threatening anaphylactic reactions to more vague reactions such as fatigue, brain fog, behavioral changes, skin rashes and eczema, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and aches and pains. Sometimes babies are born with food sensitivities and sometimes they can develop as children grow especially if immune or digestive function is compromised. The good news is, that research has shown that often sensitivities can be traced back to the prenatal period and that they can be dynamic which means there is often ways to prevent, shift or lessen these sensitivities starting from pregnancy through adulthood.
Naturopathic Doctors Dr. Marisa Williams and Dr. Sarah Rothman will be giving an overview of types of food sensitivities, ways to test for them and ways to manage them from a Naturopathic perspective.

Free
